The One and Only Mr. Soul-Blues Dynamite is Back The Sugaray Rayford Band (USA)
When Sugaray Rayford belts out a song, you not only hear it, you feel it. When he takes the stage, the excitement in the room is palpable; he is a superb vocalist and entertainer. His dynamic voice is as large as the man himself. With his old-school vocal style, echoes of Muddy Waters, Otis Redding, and Teddy Pendergrass can be heard. At 6?5?, he is a big man, but he moves with grace and energy. His fluid dance steps will remind you of the legendary James Brown.
Now, Sugaray comes back to Basel for the third time with his own band. In 2015, he performed at Groove Now with the legendary Mannish Boys that had split up the previous year. In 2017, he was fronting the Groove Now project: The Blues Giants.
Texas-born Caron "Sugaray" Rayford began his musical career at the age of 7, singing and playing drums in church; his gospel influence can still be heard and felt in his music. Rayford's phrasing is intimate and conversationa,l and the soulful gravel in his voice hints at his firsthand experience with hardship.
His switch to contemporary music began in the San Diego area, where he sang lead vocals with an R&B/Funk band called Urban Gypsys. With this band, he had the privilege of sharing the stage with many notable artists, such as The Average White Band, Dennis Quaid, and Joe Luis Walker, to name just a few.
After dabbling in blues, Sugaray realized that this was where his heart and soul belonged. A couple of years ago, Sugaray moved to Los Angeles.
In 2011, Sugaray found world-fame when he became one of the lead vocalists for the all-star band, The Mannish Boys. This band is now history, but Sugaray is still a very busy man, concentrating on his own career. What he has achieved with his current band so far is impressive enough - CDs like "Dangerous" or "Southside" demonstrate the incredible talent of this outstanding singer, bandleader, composer, and performer. "Southside" was nominated for no less than four Blues Music Awards, including 'Entertainer of the Year', 'Best Contemporary Bluesman', 'Best Contemporary Blues Album', and ?Best Blues Song of the Year? for the song, "Southside of Town".
For the 39th annual Blues Music Awards in 2018, Sugaray Rayford was nominated for four awards, including ?Best Soul Blues Male Artist?, ?Best Instrumentalist-Vocals?, ?B.B. King Entertainer of the Year?, and ?Soul Blues Album? for "The World That We Live In".
His band is spectacular and anyone who has seen Sugaray Rayford perform live will never forget his show and become an addicted fan of this outstanding artist.
