10 Years of Groove Now - Stars & Friends: Sue Foley with Special Guests Laura Chavez & Derek O?Brien (USA) The two Finest Blues Guitar Woman together on Stage.
Canadian Sue Foley has not only received awards in her home country, including numerous Juno and Maple Blues Awards as one of the most remarkable Canadian blues musicians, but also several prestigious international blues awards. But ever since this first-class guitarist and singer successfully immigrated into the legendary music scene of Austin (Texas) almost 30 years ago, she counts as one of the select circle of great Texas blues women, along with famous friends such as Lou Ann Barton, Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli and the late lamented Candye Kane. And on the electric guitar, she may hardly have a serious female rival apart from Californian Laura Chavez - Sue Foley has every right to be called "The Finest Blues Guitar Woman".
In Basel, both of them will be on stage. This is a premiere for Europe as both ladies have not performed together in Europa so far. This was made possible because of a long-lasting friendship with Groove Now. As a very special guest, Sue will also be bringing Texan blues guitar legend, Derek O'Brien, to Basel. Almost every blues guitarist names Derek as their idol. He is part of the house band at the legendary Club Antone's. Contemporary blues stars like Gary Clark Jr. refer to Derek as one of their biggest influences. Derek hardly ever plays in Europe, however two years ago, he was on stage at Groove Now for the first time and has been desperate to return to Basel ever since.
So three of the best blues guitarists in the world, Sue Foley, Laura Chavez and Derek O'Brien, will be taking the stage together at Groove Now to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this exquisite blues and soul series. With her last album the fabulous "The Ice Queen", Sue is playing with local heroes such as Jimmie Vaughan and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top fame. And she remains very conscious of the great Texas blues tradition, just like Sue Foley once so memorably remarked to the Los Angeles Times, "I wanna be the female Clarence Gatemouth Brown. I wanna be seventy-five, a wicked guitar player, and ornery as hell!" Sue Foley may just have turned fifty, but she is definitely on her way to reaching these lofty goals.
