This impressive dance production from South Africa is an attack on corruption, which has a firm grasp on many states in this world, slowly corroding societies from within. Via Kathlehong Dance is a moving proof that one is not helpless in the face of this phenomenon. Founded in 1992 as a community project in Katlehong, a township in the catchment area of Johannesburg, it gradually developed into a professional dance company. Its works are based on the pantsula, a street dance from the townships. By adding traditional elements of African dances, hip hop and gumboot dance, Via Kathlehong have turned the original meaning of the pantsula into its opposite: while originally glorifying violence and crime, the dance now serves to denounce inequality and political grievances. Gregory Maqoma exemplifies this in «Via Kanana». The choreographer has combined dance and film sequences, singing and political texts to an emotionally charged fusion of the arts. Rebelliously, angrily, yet with undiminished optimism, the ensemble dances, stamps and sings and fights for a better world. Breathtaking!
